Project MSc Bioinformatics

Overview

  • Credit value: 60 credits at Level 7
  • Convenor: Dr Irene Nobeli
  • Assessment: a project (85%) and viva (15%)

Module description

The Master's project provides you with an opportunity to undertake original research in bioinformatics. A wide variety of projects are offered from both internal and external supervisors and subjects include diverse areas such as structural modelling, analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data, construction of databases, designing and implementing new algorithms for molecular simulations, analysis of antibody repertoires etc. Both full-time and part-time students pick their project at the end of the spring term and work on it in the summer term, with part-time students completing their project in their second year, having worked on it for two summer terms.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will have:

  • identified a biological problem and proposed plausible computational avenues to explore solutions
  • carried out the appropriate literature and data searches
  • critically assessed current literature relevant to the topic
  • re-assessed and modified the research plan as needed
  • demonstrated expertise in some aspects of non-trivial computational work (e.g. extensive programming or database design, extended analysis of omics data, modelling of systems using mathematical equations)
  • made appropriate choices about how to analyse and present your data
  • applied basic statistical methods and evaluated the significance of the results presented
  • demonstrated a critical and professional approach to the analysis of results and realised when mistakes have occurred and how they may be rectified.
