Module description

This module is specifically designed to help you develop the skills you need for successful academic study - many of these skills are also useful in the workplace. You will get the opportunity to evaluate your own skills and to develop plans on how to enhance these. The module is delivered via a workshop format which gives opportunities for interaction both with the tutor and with other students.

  • Personal development planning using SMART objectives
  • Effective time management
  • How to read an academic text and take notes
  • How to plan and write an academic essay
  • How to research your essay effectively
  • How to reference your work and avoid plagiarism
  • Structuring a CV (workshop from Careers Service)
  • Making presentations

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate skills which enable you to study purposively and with confidence
  • use time management strategies in balancing the various aspects of your study and work
  • plan your personal and professional development by identifying SMART objectives for yourself
  • demonstrate communication and interpersonal skills.
