Module description

This module provides a practical introduction to the fundamental concepts of project management. It will help you to understand the processes involved in effective planning and management of projects, including resourcing and people management, and how to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to become effective project managers.

The module will try to avoid the jargon of the commercial and public sector project management methodologies but some context is given to these, in case further study is planned. Project planning will be the starting point but the module will also examine how to scope and monitor projects in order to keep them on track and within budget. Good planning and structure practices should make the management of the project as smooth, stress-free and successful as possible. Areas covered include quality, communications, project operations, organisational leadership, business ethics, risk management, contracts, project initiation, planning, financial management, and schedule control.

The module provides a robust and rigorous learning experience that focuses on leading principles and methodologies associated with project management. The curriculum stresses management and leadership concepts and aims to complement your existing business and technical expertise. The approach is participative and very interactive and you will be asked to discuss aspects of the course in light of your current exposure or intended projects.
