Module description

This module provides an introduction to drama. It will begin to develop your skill as a writer of drama and introduce you to aspects of form and elements of the playwright's craft. You will develop skills in self-evaluation and constructive analysis of your own work and the work of others, and undertake and complete a small drama project. You will also engage imaginatively in the analysis and interpretation of published and performed texts and develop your own practice as a writer, while developing your independent critical judgement, and gaining an understanding of the histories, conventions and processes of drama.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate control of basic elements of drama in your own work
  • use language more confidently, precisely and imaginatively
  • demonstrate a regular writing habit and produce more effective creative work independently
  • discuss and evaluate the work of fellow students and established playwrights in relation to basic elements of craft
  • implement basic practices of redrafting and editing
  • demonstrate awareness of how to solve basic craft-related problems in your drama
  • reflect on your own writing process and the processes of other writers
  • interpret and evaluate constructive feedback
  • broaden your knowledge and understanding of classic and contemporary drama
  • participate in workshop or small group discussion by listening and contributing ideas
  • demonstrate an awareness of the industry-standard expectations for the presentation of your creative work.
