French 4 (Level 6)

Overview

  • Credit value: 30 credits at Level 6

  • Prerequisite: CEFR* B2 or equivalent
  • Assessment: two continuous assessment exercises (15%), an in-class listening assessment (15%), in-class written assessment (30%), oral in-class assessment (15%), 2000-word self-reflexive essay in French (20%) and class participation (5%)

Module description

This 24-week module is taught at CEFR* C1 (Advanced)/post-A-level level. It will give you advanced listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in French, as well as improving your pronunciation and your cultural competence.

You will have the opportunity to consolidate your oral and written skills, focusing on appropriateness and accuracy, by:

  • analysing a variety of authentic texts, documents and audiovisual materials
  • producing original work in French
  • making use of off-air TV recordings and the internet.

Each 2.5-hour class will be conducted in French from day one.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand a wide range of demanding, longer clauses, and recognise implicit meaning
  • express ideas fluently and spontaneously
  • use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes
  • produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
