Overview
Just like the physician, the professional philosopher has a set of finely tuned skills, in addition to a solid grounding in a rich and varied body of academic work. Our Introduction to Philosophy short course is designed for those with no formal training or background in philosophy who wish to take their first step towards attaining these skills and this essential grounding. You can take this course purely for enjoyment or with the ambition to pursue a path towards a career in professional philosophy.
You will be introduced to some of the main theories and methods in four core areas of philosophy:
- Epistemology (the theory of knowledge)
- Metaphysics (the study of being)
- Political philosophy
- Ethics
As well as contemporary discussions, you will become familiar with some of the eternal questions in philosophy, such as:
- What is knowledge?
- What is justice?
- Do we have free will?
This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.
