Overview

On our Macroeconomics short course we analyse economies as a whole - national, regional and international - in order to explain broader economic changes to society. We examine the connection between households, businesses and governments and consequences for the working of the economy.

Key themes and debates include: growth, employment policy, the stability of prices and exchange rate movements, as well as the design and application of fiscal and monetary policy in the twenty-first century. We focus on developing your analytical skills and providing you with ample opportunities for discussion to improve your understanding of principle and policy.

By the end of the course, you should have a good understanding of key concepts in macroeconomics and current macroeconomic issues in the UK and elsewhere.

Teaching is through a combination of lectures, seminars and class presentations, either individually or in groups, and topics include:

  • The macroeconomic framework
  • The goods market
  • Money and money markets
  • The basic IS-LM model and policy in a closed economy
  • The labour market - wages, employment and output
  • The role of expectations
  • The international economy - goods and financial markets in an open economy
  • Inflation and unemployment
  • Economic growth

The course is assessed by two 1500-word assignments (30% each) and an in-class assessment (40%).

This can be taken as a standalone short course or as a part of:
