About writLOUD

writLOUD is a monthly readings event showcasing both new writers from Birkbeck’s Creative Writing courses and established authors.

Writers in a range of forms – short story, novel, poetry, life writing – read their work aloud in front of a friendly, supportive audience of students, related-industry professionals and the public in the relaxed, convivial surroundings of the RADA Foyer Bar.

Each event features 3-4 current and former students from Birkbeck’s Creative Writing courses plus a guest author. Jonathan Coe, Derek Johns, Hari Kunzru, Susan Elderkin, Zoë Fairbairns, Russell Celyn Jones and Peter Hobbs read in 2007; Benjamin Markovits, Erica Wagner, Marie Phillips, Kate Pullinger, Sarah Salway, Helen Simpson, Richard T. Kelly, Jeremy Sheldon, Jean McNeil and Rich Hall were our guests in 2008. Our guests in 2009 were Julia Bell, Richard Milward, Emer Martin, Blake Morrison, Nii Ayikwei Parkes, Robert Hudson, Amanda Smyth, Chloe Aridjis, Russell again, and Magnus Mills. 2010 was given a sparkling start by A. L. Kennedy, followed - and matched - by Niall O’Sullivan, Alex Preston, Toby Litt, Amanda Craig, Matthew Hooton and Monique Roffey.

Refreshments are available.
