Get Involved!
Union membership is more than just an 'insurance policy' in case things go wrong, or a token recognition of the services of the body that negotiates on your behalf. It is an opportunity for 'active citizenship' - one of the ways in which you can contribute to the health and well-being of Birkbeck as an institution, help make it a better place for everyone, and improve its contribution to wider society. Always, the burden of union work is carried by too few individuals. There are several ways you can get involved:
- Be a Departmental Contact. You can find a list of contacts here but it is always good to rotate.
- Respond to requests for help and advice - often this may mean little more than 'listening and sharing'; sometimes accompanying members (normally in a department or school other than your own) to meetings. More experienced colleagues will always be available to provide advice and back-up where needed.
- Join the Committee. You don't need to be a committee member to be a departmental contact or to help other members, but your participation in the Committee will help strengthen UCU's work and broaden our representation. If you would like to 'sit in' on the next Committee meeting (we normally meet fortnightly, at lunchtime) then please contact any member of the UCU Committee.
If you'd like to get more involved then just come to the next UCU Branch Committee you can:
- contact Birkbeck UCU by email Your email will be forwarded to the most appropriate person to help.
- Or you can contact any member of the UCU Committee
- Or just come to the next UCU Branch Meeting
- Or you can speak with your Departmental Contact who will be delighted to hear from you!.
