Help with using the Birkbeck web site
Birkbeck UCU

Joining UCU

  • You can join online via the national UCU web site . This is the quickest way to become a member of UCU.  Paper applications forms take longer to process and you need to post them to UCU HQ - it is best to join online.
  • If you really do need a paper form you can pdf format download one here - but doing it on-line is much simpler!

Changing your details

  • Once you are a member you can update your record online- you will need your membership number and if you haven't  registered your username or password you will need to do this first.  Birkbeck UCU branch's code is LE176
  • This is by far the quickest way to change your contact details - such as your address, preferred email, your Birkbeck department, to notify UCU of changes in your employment status,  (or your new institution and to transfer from Birkbeck to a different Branch if you change jobs)  &c.

Other queries

  • If you have difficulty in the above, or have any other membership queries for example issues around periods of leave/sabbaticals,  tax etc try the UCU website first or contact the  Branch Secretary or membership officer.
  • Please note there are reduced rates for part-time and lower paid staff, and PhD students who are not earning may join the union free (and can switch each term between paid and unpaid as their status changes).

Note: UCU Committee members and Representatives are all volunteers.  We take on union duties in addition to our 'day jobs' because we believe the work is important - to the benefit of Birkbeck as an institution, its staff and students, and to the health of society generally.   The union will only be as good as you help to make it, so we invite you to get involved now.
