The Library is committed to helping the environment by creating an awareness of how people can contribute towards making Birkbeck a greener place. We have a dedicated Green Group and are keen to recycle as much as possible. We have a regular Green Corner column in our weekly staff newsletter and staff are encouraged to be energy aware by turning computers off when they are not in use, and turning lights off when they are not needed. We purchase recycled stationery wherever possible and use energy efficient bulbs in all of our lights. We also have a small compost bin in our staff room!
We have withdrawn the free plastic bags that were available at the issue desk, and have started selling Birkbeck Library Fairtrade cotton bags at the Library Issue Desk for £1.00 each.
You can now recycle all your paper (white and coloured), magazines, newspapers and envelopes in the small blue bins in the Library. There are also several large blue recycling bins for bottles (plastic and glass) throughout the Library; there is one of these on each level of the Library, by the windows, and one outside the seminar room.
Please help us in our efforts to make Birkbeck a greener place in which to work and study. Visit the Green Library website for further details about our initiatives. If you have comments about green issues and the Library, please contact library-green@bbk.ac.uk.
