Birkbeck 'Green Teams'

What are Green Teams?
A Green Team is any group of people who want to get together to discuss ways to lower the ecological footprint of their workplace. They can be made up of any number of people, be focused on different issues and work in different ways. Goals can be modest or ambitious - what counts is doing something and encouraging or facilitating others to do something too! The Library has the most organised Green Team at present. Details of some of their activities can be found by clicking on the link on the left.

What sort of things do Green Teams do?
This really depends on what sort of department or unit you work in but could include encouraging people to turn off lights and switch off PC monitors through to measuring paper use and seeing if it can be reduced over a time period. It could mean setting out a recycling box and having the team empty it, encouraging people to bring in mugs instead of using plastic cups or organising bulk buying of compact fluorescent light bulbs for people to use at home. Anything goes!

How often do Green Teams meet?
As often as it suits you. Occasionally all the College Green Teams might like to get together to share ideas and experiences. You may also wish to contact similar Green Teams in other universities to exchange information.

What is the College's role?
The Environmental Management Group is strongly encouraging the formation of Green Teams or failing that, individual 'green contacts/champions' in each School and Department through 'what you can do' sessions. Details of all green contacts are listed on the 'Contact us' above.

How do I/we set one up?
Just declare yourselves to be one and start to do what you can. Get in touch with the 'College Green' website co-ordinator and get yourself listed on the 'Contact us' section so that others know who you are and can offer to help.
