Japanese and Film/Media (BA) - 2013/2014 entry

Course structure
You complete the equivalent of 12 full (30-credit) modules, taking six film and media modules and six Japanese modules, four of which will be Japanese language modules. Students who attain an Advanced level (Japanese 5) of proficiency after four years of study will be awarded BA Film/Media and Japanese. Students who attain an Upper Intermediate level (Japanese 4) of proficiency after four years of study will be awarded BA Film/Media with Japanese.
Year 1
- two compulsory modules (Level 4): Media Analysis; Japanese 1 or Japanse 2 or Japanese 3
- one option module (Level 4) from: Introduction to Cinema; Television – History and Future; or The Press in Britain.
Year 2
- one compulsory film and media module (Level 5): Film – Narrative and Genre
- one compulsory Japanese culture module (Level 5): Rethinking Japan
- one compulsory Japanese language module: Japanese 2 (Level 4) or Japanese 3 (Level 5) or Japanese 4 (Level 5)
Year 3
- one compulsory Japanese language module (Level 5): Japanese 3 or Japanese 4 or Japanese 5 (Level 6)
- one film and media option module (Level 5) from: Cultural Identity and the Media; or Storytelling in Television
- one Japanese culture module (Level 6): Popular Culture in Japan and East Asia; or Theorising East Asia.
Year 4
- one compulsory Japanese language module: Japanese 4 (Level 5) or Japanese 5 (Level 6)
- compulsory final-year project (Level 6): for your final year project you are required to submit a dissertation of between 6000 and 8000 words on a topic of your choice. The final year project topic of research should normally be related to your study of and/or interest in Japanese and/or East Asian film/media. Use of primary and/or secondary sources in Japanese according to your level of language proficiency is strongly encouraged, but not required.
- two option modules (Level 6) from: Documentary; Globalisation and Media Cultures; Manga and Anime; Upper Advanced Japnese; World Cinema.
You might also be able to substitute other modules from the BA Film and Media and other programmes in the School of Arts.
