Modern Languages (with two of French, German, Japanese, Portuguese or Spanish) (BA) - 2012/2013 entry
-
Course structure
You take 12 modules: four at Level 4; four at Level 5; and four at Level 6. You will normally take six modules in each of two languages.
In each language you will follow one of a number of language pathways, depending on your language level at entry. The language module taken in the first year of study is at Level 4 and is always zero-weighted (i.e. it does not count towards your degree). Subsequent modules follow in sequence. You may start one language (only) at beginner’s or near-beginner’s level, in which case you will attain a language level equivalent to at least one year’s study beyond A-level. With the higher levels of entry, the aim is to raise your language level to near-native standard in your chosen language.
Remaining modules may be chosen from those relating to the culture (literature, film, visual arts, contemporary history) of the languages studied, many taught primarily in the language in question; or from a range of cross-cultural modules, which offer a comparative perspective on the cultures of France and francophone countries, Germany and German-speaking countries, Spain, Portugal, Latin America and East Asia (taught in English); or from modules in applied linguistics.
