Course structure
You complete 12 modules from the examples listed below, taking three modules in each year. Not more than five creative modules may be taken.
Year 1Two compulsory modules at Level 4:
Plus one of the following Level 4 option modules:
- Introduction to Journalism
- Making the Web Work
- Screenwriting
- Television – History and Future
- The Press in Britain
Years 2–3
Four modules at Level 5, including at least two of the following core courses:
- Approaches to Cinema History
- Film – Narrative and Genre
- Media and Society
Level 5 option modules include:
- Cultural Identity and the Media
- Digital Media Theory
- Documentary
- Effective Website Development
- Japanese Cinema History
- Journalism and Politics
- Journalism – Interview Skills and Feature Writing
- Screenwriting – The Thirty-Minute Script
- Storytelling in Television
Years 3–4
Five modules at Level 6, including a compulsory final-year project: either a 6000–8000-word dissertation, a film or television script, or a practical multimedia or journalism project.
Level 6 option modules include:
- Contemporary European Cinema
- Dynamic Web Communications
- Gender and Sexuality in Cinema
- Media at War (half-module subject to approval)
- On the Air in the Digital Age
- Research Methods.
- Screenwriting: The Film Script
- Television Studio Workshop
- The Mediated City (half-module subject to approval)
- World Cinema.

Study resources
Birkbeck Library has an extensive teaching collection of books and journals in film and media studies. Students can also take advantage of the rich research collections nearby, including the British Film Institute and Senate House Library.
The Centre for Media, Culture and Creative Practice organises a lively programme of seminars and events.

Further study opportunities
