Overview
You will have the opportunity to attend field courses, and many classes involve a laboratory-based component. Techniques for studying the environment are an important area of study – you will use computers for data analysis and cover the establishment of geographical information systems.

Course structure
The programme starts with foundation modules in ecology, geography and geology, and moves on to more advanced modules that allow you to explore chosen topics in greater depth.
Years 1 and 2
Foundation modules in:
- Global Environmental Issues
- Humans and Environment
- Introductory Geology
- Ecological Communities
- Environmental Processes
- Methods, Analysis and Techniques (with field courses in the UK and overseas).
Years 3 and 4
A choice of option modules, including:
- Applied Hydrology
- Coastal Processes and Management
- Conservation – People, Policy and Practice
- Earth History
- Ecological Survey and Monitoring
- Environmental Interpretation
- Environmental Modelling
- Principles of Geographical Information Systems
- Remote Sensing and Image Processing
- Species and Population.
Modules taught by other departments may also be available.
You will undertake an independent project in Years 3 and 4.
