  • Assessment

    • Each module has an examination at the end of the year. Regular assessed coursework usually contribute 20% of the marks for the module; normally this consists of between two and four take-home exercise sets, but there may be in-class tests for some modules.

  • Attendance
      • Three evenings a week.
      • October–June.
      • One daytime examination per module in the May–June examination period.

      • Four years part-time.
  • Entry requirements
      • A-level mathematics or equivalent. If you do not have such a qualification, we would ask you to take an entrance test.
      • Good written and spoken English.
      • All applicants have to attend a management selection evening.

  • Teaching

    • For each module you will typically come for one evening a week during the autumn and spring terms, with revision lectures in the summer term.

      The teaching will mostly be face-to-face lectures, with a mixture of explaining new material and working through examples. Some modules have a computing component and this will involve sessions in workstation rooms for which the class will usually split into smaller groups.

Statistics and Accounting (BSc) - 2013/2014 entry

Develop a range of mathematical and statistical skills, together with an understanding of managerial and financial accounting. This course aims to provide a broad education in statistics and accounting, by concentrating on the methods and techniques of mathematics, statistics and accounting and by setting out the theory behind these ideas. There are numerous career pathways for statisticians and those with mathematical accountancy training, including accountancy, financial services, data collection, research and analysis.

    • The Birkbeck Library contains copies of all the recommended texts for the programme. There are facilities for private study in the library, which has late night opening every day of the week. In addition, the College has several computer workstation rooms. Lecturing staff are available either in regular office hours or by appointment to discuss your work, and each student has a personal tutor who can give general study advice. Birkbeck has a full programme of study skills courses to help students returning to education.

      The Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics has a first-rate teaching record. It was praised in the last Quality Assurance Agency inspection for the level of support and guidance available to students, and for the constructive undergraduate admissions procedure, which enables students from a wide variety of backgrounds to gain access to higher education.
