    • Coursework makes up at least 20% of the assessment of all modules; most modules also have an examination in the summer term.

      • Over 21: good level of mathematical ability; A-level mathematics desirable but not essential; applicants may be required to take an entrance test in mathematics.

      • The Certificates of Higher Education in Mathematical Studies and Physics and Mathematics are an entry qualification.

  • Teaching

    • Mainly by lectures; some modules involve computer-based learning. For each module you will have weekly three-hour evening sessions with the lecturer, who will work through the material along with exercises and examples. Coursework, past examination papers and other resources are available online to download.

Mathematics (BSc) - 2013/2014 entry

A broad education in mathematics – and the application of mathematics to problems in the natural and social sciences – lies at the core of this degree. The course covers theoretical aspects of the subject as well as methods and modelling techniques. Computing forms an integral part too, both as an aid to understanding the course material and in problem-solving. You will develop an understanding of a range of mathematical skills, together with the abstract background to help you make sense of this material.

    • The Birkbeck Library contains copies of all the recommended texts for the programme. There are facilities for private study in the library, which has late night opening every day of the week. In addition the College has several computer workstation rooms. Lecturing staff are available either in regular office hours or by appointment to discuss your work, and each student has a personal tutor who can give general study advice. Birkbeck has a full programme of study skills courses to help students returning to education.

      The Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics has a first-rate teaching record. It was praised in the last Quality Assurance Agency inspection for the level of support and guidance available to students, and for the constructive undergraduate admissions procedure, which enables students from a wide variety of backgrounds to gain access to higher education.

      The BSc Mathematics and BSc Mathematics and Statistics programmes have a common core of modules for the first two years. It is therefore possible to transfer between programmes during this time should your preference change.
