  • Assessment

    • Language modules are assessed by oral (May) and written examination (June) and, in some cases, by coursework. All other modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework essays and a May/June examination.

  • Attendance
      • Two–three evenings a week.
      • October–June.
  • Duration
      • Four years part-time.
  • Entry requirements
      • You should normally have at least GCSE/A2 (CEFR) competence in your chosen language (native speakers of the target languages are welcome to apply).
      • Admission is based on a written test, a language entry test and an interview
      • Entry requirements: No formal qualifications required for applicants over 21. Information for applicants under 21 can be found here.
      • English language requirements (for non-native speakers): our normal requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.
      • Credit for prior studies may be possible depending on whether your earlier studies are relevant and on when they took place.

  • Teaching

    • A combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and conversation classes with a strong emphasis on student participation. Teaching takes place in small, informal groups.

Languages and Film/Media (French / German / Portuguese / Spanish) (BA) - 2013/2014 entry

Combine studying a modern language (French, German, Portuguese or Spanish) and its associated culture with film and media studies. Gain a thorough grounding in all areas of media study and an understanding of the ways in which the media relate to each other. Develop your critical approaches, so that you can put your own and others' work in context.
  • Course structure

    • You complete the equivalent of 12 full (30-credit) modules, taking six film and media modules and six culture and language modules, four of which will be from one of the languages on offer, forming a language pathway. Four modules are taken at Level 4, four at Level 5 and four at Level 6.

      Year 1

      Year 2

      • one core language module (Level 4 or 5 according to language pathway)
      • one optional culture module (Level 4 or 5 according to language pathway)
      • one compulsory film and media module (Level 5): Film: Narrative and Genre.

      Year 3

      Year 4

      • one core language or optional culture module (Level 6)
      • compulsory final-year project in either film/media or culture (Level 6)
      • one further Level 6 module either in film/media or culture (please note: two Level 6 modules are taken on each side of the programme).
