    • Coursework – continuous assessment; dissertation of 12,000–15,000 words or critical review of 4000–5000 words.

  • Attendance
      • Two–three evenings a week.
      • October–July part-time; October–September full-time.
  • Duration
      • Two years part-time or one year full-time.
  • Entry requirements
      • Normally an upper second-class honours degree or above (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant subject and/or relevant professional training and language teaching experience.
      • You must have recent and relevant experience of, and/or professional training in, classroom language teaching.
      • If English is not your first language, you will need an English language qualification (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent) completed within the last two years, unless you can provide evidence that you have completed a degree in an English-speaking university.
      • An interview may be required. You may also be asked for a lesson plan and post-lesson reflection of no more than 500 words.
      • You must provide two references, at least one of which should be an academic reference.

  • Overview

    • This programme values the importance of bridging the gap between theory and practice and is structured to reflect the fine balance between the two. In addition to two core modules and two option modules, you will be required to complete a dissertation, which is designed to ensure a good coverage of the curriculum and the full range of learning outcomes and to bring together knowledge and skills learnt in different taught modules.

    • The Birkbeck Applied Linguistics Society, an official University of London society, was formed to bring together students interested in applied linguistics and related fields (for example multilingualism, intercultural communication and TESOL) in the London area.

      Birkbeck’s Centre for Multilingual and Multicultural Research hosts visiting scholars from all over the world and runs regular research seminars given by speakers from overseas and other UK institutions. The centre also supports postgraduate training in applied linguistics, bilingualism, intercultural communication and translation.
