-
Overview
This programme provides the technical and pedagogical knowledge necessary for designing, developing and evaluating learning technologies from the perspective of state-of-the-art AI and computer science techniques, learning theory, and teaching practice, and develops a sound foundation for entry to a career in learning technologies or to a research degree in the subject.
-
Why study this course at Birkbeck?
- Provides academic grounding for the profession of learning technologist.
- Taught by senior academics from two world-class departments at Birkbeck and the Institute of Education.
- Distinctive in its twin focus on the computer science and the learning theory that together underpin the optimal development of learning technologies.
-
Course structure
There are two routes through the programme: Route A is appropriate for those without significant prior experience of computing; and Route B for those with significant prior experience of computing, including prior experience with using an object-oriented programming language.
You complete the taught element of the programme by choosing from a range of specialist modules, such as:
- Pedagogy, Adaptivity and Technology
- Research Methods in Learning Technologies
- Programming in Java
- Object-Oriented Design and Programming
- Intelligent Technologies
- Internet and Web Technologies
- Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing
- Semantic Web
- Learning and Teaching with Technology.
Additionally, you undertake an individual project comprising the design and development of a substantial software system targeted at a specific learning setting.
-
Study resources
This programme is taught jointly by Birkbeck and the Institute of Education, and you will have access to facilities at both institutions.
You will have 24-hour access to several laboratories of networked PCs with a range of language compilers, database and other application software. We are connected, via the SuperJANET network, to the computers of other academic institutions in London, elsewhere in the UK, and abroad.
-
Further study opportunities
If you are interested in further research, we offer a PhD/MPhil in Computer Science and Information Systems at Birkbeck, and a PhD/MPhil in Learning with Digital Technologies is offered at the Institute of Education.
