Analytical Bioscience (MSc / Postgraduate Diploma) - 2013/2014 entry
-
Overview
This programme provides advanced training for work and research in the molecular biosciences, biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors. You can gain extensive hands-on experience in a laboratory setting. It is designed to allow flexibility in attendance requirements, with material being delivered via a mixture of face-to-face classes, distance learning, practical classes, tutorials and a research project.
-
Why study this course at Birkbeck?
- Receive a comprehensive training in analysis techniques used in the molecular bioscience, biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors.
- Offers the opportunity to complete a research project in our research laboratories.
- Part of the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, a joint initiative with University College London.
- Very flexible modular programme: one-third is delivered by distance learning, allowing you to combine study with other commitments.
-
Course structure
Compulsory module topics taught face-to-face with practical classes generally include:
- clinical and bio-pharmaceutical analysis
- NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry
- optical spectroscopy and atomic spectrometry
- separation science.
Most students will also take the module Techniques in Structural Molecular Biology and learn about:
- bioinformatics as applied to this area
- protein expression and purification
- protein spectroscopy
- structure determination by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and NMR
- techniques for DNA manipulation.
If you have a particular interest in protein crystallography, you can take the online Protein Crystallography module. If you wish to expand your skills, you can attend additional practical microbiology and statistical analysis classes.
You will spend one-third of the programme working on a novel research project. The projects offered cover a wide range of fields, and you may choose between working in one of our 'wet' research laboratories, carrying out a biocomputational project or, if suitable, conducting research at your place of work. The Postgraduate Diploma is awarded for successfully completing all the taught modules but not the project, or at least half of the taught modules and the project.

Study resources
Analytical Bioscience is taught in the Department of Biological Sciences, which offers state-of-the-art instrumental and computing facilities, and the possibility of collaborating with industry. The department and the Institute of Structural Molecular Biology also provide a seminar programme and skills training across disciplines.
-
Further study opportunities
If you are interested in further research, we offer a PhD/MPhil in Biological Sciences.
-
Careers information
In addition to academic research, graduates go on to careers in the health sector, toxicology, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing.
