Overview
This programme is devoted to the advanced study of the archaeology and cultural legacies of ancient Greece and Rome within their Mediterranean context. It provides you with the skills required to retrieve and evaluate archaeological evidence and realise the potential it offers to enhance our understanding of ancient cultures and societies. The programme is for anybody interested in preparing for doctoral or professional research, or specialist work in heritage management.

Course structure
The core module taken in the first year has a broad thematic range and integrates methodological and interpretative approaches to the classical material past with debates on its modern reception and interpretation.
You will study three option modules (two in your first year and one in your second) on such diverse subjects as:
- From Temples to Museums: Post-Classical Encounters with Classical Antiquities
- The Greeks and the Sea
- The Edge of Empire: The Archaeology of Roman Frontiers
- The Medieval Mediterranean, c.285–1095
- Geographical Information Systems for Classical Archaeologists.
You will also write a dissertation on a subject of your choice in your second year, under the guidance of experienced academic staff.

Study resources
We are located five minutes’ walk from the British Museum and 10 minutes from the British Library. Other nearby specialist centres of research include the Institute of Classical Studies and the Institute of Historical Research (both located next door to Birkbeck), the Institute of Archaeology and the Warburg Institute. All four institutes have internationally renowned library collections and offer regular seminars on research areas covered by the department.
