Overview
This programme is designed for those who wish to undertake postgraduate study in French, and in particular those who would like to take the MA Modern Languages: French Studies at Birkbeck, but who need to bring their written French up to the right level, or who do not have a BA honours qualification in an appropriate discipline. It can also be taken by students with a qualification of or near BA level who would like to take a one-year qualification, with courses chosen from a diverse and challenging syllabus.

Course structure
Take a high-level French language module, French VI – Dissertation en Français, and choose two from a range of option modules:
- An Introduction to Modern French Poetry
- Kith or Kin? Forms of Relation and Community in Contemporary French Literature and Cinema
- La France Dechirée: Aspects de l'Histoire Contemporaine Francaise
- La France des Années Noires
- Le Roman Français Contemporain
- Mémoire en Français
- Montaigne
- The French Novel of Disillusionment
- Transgression in Nineteenth-Century French Literature and Culture
- Translation from and into French.
In addition, you may take one of our culture modules, for example:
- Beating Nature: Artificiality, Imitation and Simulation
- Myth, Folk and Fairytales
- Melodrama.
