Building on a long and distinguished tradition at Birkbeck, this programme introduces advanced archaeological methods and practice. It has much to offer anybody interested in developing an understanding of this exciting discipline. It has a strong practical base and you will develop many skills, including survey, excavation and post-excavation work, all learnt in the context of wider interpretive and analytical issues fundamental to archaeology.

What will I be studying?

Core module: designed to provide information about the various processes involved in undertaking archaeological projects, from prospecting for sites through to the stages of analysis and publication.

Four specialist option modules from a range including:

  • Animal Bones in Archaeology
  • Archaeological Draughtsmanship
  • Experimental Archaeology
  • Field Survey
  • Geophysical Survey
  • Human Bones and Archaeology
  • Interpretation and Presentation of Archaeological Sites and Monuments
  • Post-Excavation and Publication
  • Recording Standing Buildings.

Dissertation on an archaeological subject of your choice, with appropriate advice as necessary.

What can I go on to do?

If you are interested in further research, we offer a PhD/MPhil in Archaeology.

Archaeology graduates also go on to careers as archaeologists or in related fields such as in museums or galleries, building conservation or education.
