      Classes are held on Wednesday evenings.

      There are 30 weekly 3-and-a-half-hour sessions, with 1 tutorial per term and a 3-day non-residential group relations weekend school (please note: this is a compulsory component of the programme).

  • Duration

    • 1 year part-time.

  • Entry requirements

    • You will be expected to have some basic knowledge or experience of counselling. You should have relevant, ongoing work or voluntary sector experience.

      All modules are taught at university level and you should be able to read, write and speak English fluently. If you need help, we offer a range of academic English and language development modules.

  • Overview
    • Birkbeck is widely recognised as a centre of excellence for counselling courses. This course combines practical counselling skills with the study of organisations and how they work, so it's ideal if you want to develop your helping skills in professional or voluntary roles, or if you wish to eventually train as a professional counsellor. You'll develop your observational skills and increase your self-knowledge in relation to professional tasks. A 3-day group relations weekend exploring organisational dynamics is included.
  • Course structure and modules

    • To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete the following modules, worth a total of 120 credit points:

      • Module 1: Intra-psychic and Interpersonal Dynamics (FFCS401S4)
      • Module 2: Group and Organisational Dynamics (FFCS402S4)
      • Module 3: Applied Psychodynamics (FFCS403S4)
      • Module 4: Group and Organisational Dynamics (experiential learning - group relations weekend school) (FFCS026S4).

      Please note: you must apply for the whole award and take the modules in order. You may not sign up for individual modules.
