Why study this course at Birkbeck?
This programme provides an introduction to key theories, methods, debates and empirical topics in sociology. You will learn about important concepts and theories, and will be introduced to contemporary social, cultural and political debates revolving around topics like migration and globalisation, race and gender, youth, crime and consumption. It will help you to develop a sound understanding of different sociological perspectives and to integrate both your academic learning and your own experience into wider debates on social inequality, diversity and social justice.

Course structure and modules

To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete modules worth a total of 120 credit points. After taking two core modules (worth 30 credits each), you can then pursue your own academic interests and choose option modules worth an additional 60 credits. Option modules are drawn from other subject areas, which have been chosen for their sociological content and relevance.
Please note that modules are offered on condition that enrolments reach a satisfactory level. Unfortunately, modules that do not reach this level may be withdrawn before the term begins.

Further study opportunities
Students who take modules worth 90 credit points with a minimum pass mark of 50% can progress into Year 2 of Birkbeck's BSc Social Science or BSc Community Development and Public Policy programme.

Some modules are marked ME(P) (modular enrolment with prerequisites): you can enrol on these modules as long as you meet the required prerequisites.
