Why study this course at Birkbeck?
This programme presents the main branches of psychoanalytic theory and their application to a range of themes and issues. It will give you a systematic introduction to psychoanalysis and some of the ways psychoanalytic theory can be applied. Anyone with an interest in psychoanalytic ideas may apply, and the modules may also be used for professional development by practising or trainee counsellors. However, the programme does not constitute professional training as such.

Course structure and modules
-
To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete modules worth a total of 120 credit points.
You must complete the core module, Freudian Foundations of Psychoanalysis (worth 30 credits), and this module is normally taken first. The remaining 90 credits should be selected from the available option modules. These can be taken in any order and more than one may be taken at a time. The option modules offered explore particular areas within psychoanalytic psychology and topics vary each year. You may also choose option modules from the list of selected psychology and applied psychology modules, to a maximum value of 30 credits.
Please note that in future years this Certificate of Higher Education is likely to have fewer option modules than are currently available. Consequently, you are advised to take the opportunity to enrol for any option modules you are particularly interested in or need to complete, in case these are not available next year.
Students may be awarded a Certificate of Continuing Education as an intermediate award on completion of modules worth 60 credits from this programme, including the core module Freudian Foundations of Psychoanalysis. You may not register for the Certificate of Continuing Education, as it is only awarded as an intermediate award to those unable to complete their Certificate of Higher Education during the normal period of registration.
