- Birkbeck is widely recognised as a centre of excellence for courses in counselling.
- Provides a broad-based introduction for people studying counselling for the first time.
- Ideal if you want to develop your helping skills in professional or voluntary roles, or if you wish eventually to train as a professional counsellor.
- Can be taken on a stand-alone basis, but also forms part of the Certificate of Higher Education in Counselling and Counselling Skills.

Course structure and modules

You will be introduced to a range of counselling theories and practices, and will learn how they can help in understanding human growth and emotional development. You will develop your own self-reflection and self-awareness, and will also learn how to apply this knowledge in various helping relationships.
Introduction to Counselling January class is a weekend course where students are required to attend one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) every month. The sessions run from 10.15am–3.15pm every day. Please ensure that you are available to attend all sessions.

Further study opportunities
- You may go on to complete the Certificate of Higher Education in Counselling and Counselling Skills or apply for the Certificate of Higher Education in Psychodynamic Counselling and Organisational Dynamics or our Foundation Degree in Psychodynamic Counselling and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Subsequently, you may go on to a professional training course, such as our MSc Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy.
