Why study this course at Birkbeck?
This flexible, multidisciplinary programme gives you the chance to develop skills in different areas of creative media practice, to understand the industrial, political and social context of your work, and to evaluate your performance. A key objective is to develop your understanding of media culture, so that you can put your own work, and the work of others, in context. The programme offers a wide range of modules taught by practitioners and is intended to develop your communication, study, written, teamwork and performance skills as appropriate.

Course structure and modules

To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete modules worth a total of 120 credit points.
There are no compulsory modules or pathways, as this programme is designed to allow you flexible learning across modes of media. Take modules worth a minimum of 90 credits at Level 4 and no more than 30 credits at Level 5. You may include up to 30 credits at Level 4 from the Certificate of Higher Education in Film and Media Studies towards this award.
Please note: certain introductory modules are designated as prerequisites for more advanced or specialised modules (please refer to module descriptions for details).

Successfully completing the Certificate of Higher Education can reduce your part-time BA degree study at Birkbeck by up to one year. Several modules form part of degree programmes at Birkbeck:
- BA Film and Media: Screenwriting; Introduction to Journalism; Media, Technology and Society; Web Design and Development: Effective Website Development.
- BA Journalism and Media: Introduction to Journalism; News Around the World; Journalism: Production Skills and Specialisations; Writing for Magazines; Media, Technology and Society; Web Design and Development: Effective Website Development
- Foundation Degree in Arts and Media Management: Screenwriting; Introduction to Journalism; Introduction to Public Relations; Web Design and Development: Effective Website Development; Public Relations: Theory, Practices, Specialisations.
If you are offered a place on these degrees, you may apply for retrospective credit for these modules, and may be offered retrospective credit for your other Level 4 and Level 5 option modules, at the discretion of the BA course director.

Some modules are marked ME(P) (modular enrolment with prerequisites): you can enrol on these modules as long as you meet the required prerequisites.
