Great Egyptologists
We will begin with Herodotus and other classical writers, plus the Shelley connection. We will investigate whether medieval Arab scholars discovered the key to hieroglyphs. Subsequent highlights include: carving up the Nile post-Napoleon – decipherers, diplomats, adventurers and early egyptologists; emerging Egyptology – Lepsius, Mariette and Maspero, and the paintings of David Roberts; 'Father of Pots' and 'Father of Skulls' – Petrie and Budge; great twentieth-century projects – the contribution of German, British and Dutch Egyptologists; great discoveries – the work of Breasted, Reisner, Carter and Schiaparelli; women egyptologists; archaeology at Amarna; and philology at Deir el-Medina – Pendlebury and Černý.
