The English Civil War: Causes, Conflict, Consequence
This module examines the English Civil War (1642–51) and the short-lived republican government of the Commonwealth and Protectorate that followed; a key event in English history. Using a variety of sources – including political and legal documents, pamphlets, diaries, letters, speeches and printed images – we will consider: why England descended into conflict; the nature of the conflict and its effect on society, culture and ideas; the experience of London during the conflict; and the consequences and contribution of the turbulence of the 1640s and 1650s to later English history.
