Why study this course at Birkbeck?
This programme offers you an introduction to geology, with an emphasis on mineralogy and volcanology. Key themes to be explored include hard rock geology, the use of petrographic microscopes, and geohazard activity.
There is no fieldwork requirement, although you may attend field classes if you wish and may replace one half-module with a first-year Easter field class.

To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete the following modules, worth a total of 120 credit points.
Year 1
Compulsory modules:
- Introduction to Geology (30 credits)
- Introduction to Geochemistry*
- Foundations of Mineralogy.*
Year 2
Two compulsory half-modules:
- Igneous Petrology*
- Metamorphic Petrology.*
Choice of two half-modules from:
- Earth’s Resources and Raw Materials*+
- Magmatic Processes*+
- Volcanism in the Solar System*+
- Geological Hazards.*+
* 15-credit half-modules.
+ Available in alternate years.
