Why study this course at Birkbeck?
If you would like to know more about the media in all its forms, this programme will help you develop a better understanding of our complex media world. It draws on the diverse research interests of our panel of lecturers in film, television and media studies, and is designed to encourage systematic study of film and media at a high level. Studying film and media will help enhance your ability to interpret the social, economic and cultural structures behind the films, television programmes and newspapers we enjoy.

Course structure and modules

To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete modules worth a total of 120 credit points.
Take the compulsory module, Introduction to Cinema (worth 30 credits), and choose option modules from the list below. You should complete modules worth a minimum of 90 credits at Level 4 (which must include the compulsory module) and no more than 30 credits at Level 5.

Further study opportunities
Successfully completing the Certificate of Higher Education can reduce your part-time BA degree studies at Birkbeck by up to one year. Several modules form part of related degree programmes at Birkbeck:
- BA Film and Media, BA Arts and Humanities and Foundation Degree in Arts and Media Management: Introduction to Cinema; Television: History and Future; The Press in Britain; and all the Level 5 option modules
- BA Journalism and Media: The Press in Britain; Journalism and Politics; Media, Technology and Society.
If you are offered a place on these degrees, you may apply for retrospective credit for the modules listed above, and may be offered retrospective credit for your other Level 4 and Level 5 option modules at the discretion of the BA course director.

Some modules are marked ME(P) (modular enrolment with prerequisites): you can enrol on these modules as long as you meet the required prerequisites.
