Why study this course at Birkbeck?
This intensive programme provides an exposure to those who wish to gain introductory theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of GIS. It focuses on meeting the fast-changing educational and training needs of future professionals in the dynamically developing geo-information sector. It also offers a foundation for those who wish to continue studying at Birkbeck for a further degree in geography or GIS. To achieve this, the programme offers three taught modules and one practical independent project module. The modules consist of lectures on theoretical and methodological aspects of GIS, and practical hands-on exercises, in which you apply the theoretical concepts learnt.

Course structure and modules

To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete modules worth 120 credit points. To gain the Certificate of Continuing Education, you must successfully complete modules worth 60 credit points.
The programme consists of four modules, each worth 30 credit points:
For the Certificate of Higher Education, you must complete all four modules. For the Certificate of Continuing Education, you must complete any two of modules 1–3.

We offer further study in GISc in our MSc/Postgraduate Diploma/Postgraduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science, which are also offered by distance learning.
Credits from this award may be counted towards BSc courses offered by the Department of Geography, Environment and Development Studies.
