    • A mixture of tutor-marked assignments, mini-projects and coursework portfolio (no examinations).

  • Attendance

    • Saturdays (9.30am–4.30pm) or weekday evenings (6pm–9pm).  

  • Duration

    • The programme is flexible and can take up to four years to complete (two–four years for the Certificate of Higher Education or one–two years for the Certificate of Continuing Education).

  • Entry requirements

    • No formal entry requirements. However, good numeracy and literacy skills are required, as well as good keyboard and basic computer skills, such as the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). Students may also be required to take an English test.

      • If you are a new student starting on a course in autumn 2012, you may be able to get a student loan to cover your fees and other Birkbeck financial support. Check if you're eligible.

Web Design Technologies (Certificate of Higher Education) - 2012/2013 entry


  • Overview
      • Gain a University of London qualification – expand your knowledge and enhance your CV.
      • Ideal if you want to develop professional web design and authoring skills and learn how to apply these skills in the workplace.
      • Opportunity to carry out a project tackling a real-life, work-related problem.
      • Can be a stand-alone award, or you can go on to gain a Foundation Degree in Information Technology or a Foundation Degree in Web Technologies.

    • This university-level, professional development programme provides an introduction to web design and multimedia authoring in a business environment. Its main aim is to develop knowledge, technical skills and expertise in areas affected by rapidly changing information, database and web technologies. It will be of interest to those wishing to develop professional and work-related web design and web authoring skills and who want to learn how to apply these in commercial and not-for-profit organisations. Use is made of XHMTL and CSS, JavaScript, XML, Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash), MySQL and PHP to build interactive web applications.

    • Students who complete the Certificate of Continuing Education in Web Design Technologies (four modules worth 60 credits) have the option of continuing their studies by completing the Certificate of Higher Education in Web Design Technologies or transferring to Year 2 of the Foundation Degree in Information Technology.

      Students who complete the Certificate of Higher Education in Web Design Technologies (eight modules worth 120 credits) have the option of continuing their studies to gain a Foundation Degree in Web Technologies. Completion of the Foundation Degrees requires two further years of part-time study. Students then have the option of continuing their studies to gain a BSc Information Systems and Computing.
