Why study this course at Birkbeck?
This university-level, professional development programme provides an introduction to the use of information, database and web technologies in a business environment. Its main aim is to develop knowledge, technical skills and expertise in areas affected by rapidly changing information, communication and web technologies. It will be of interest to those wishing to develop professional and work-related IT skills and who want to learn how to apply these skills in commercial and not-for-profit organisations.

Course structure and modules

You must first complete a Certificate of Continuing Education in IT Applications, which comprises any four of the following modules, worth a total of 60 credit points. To gain the Certificate of Higher Education in Information Technology, you must then complete any four additional modules, worth a further 60 credits, making 120 credits in total.
All modules (except the project) can also be taken as stand-alone short courses. Students who choose to study the project usually choose this as their final option.

Further study opportunities
- Students who complete the Certificate of Continuing Education in IT Applications (four modules worth 60 credits) have the option of continuing their studies by completing the Certificate of Higher Education in Information Technology or transferring to Year 2 of the Foundation Degree in Information Technology. Completion of the Foundation Degree requires two further years of part-time study. You then have the option of continuing your studies to gain a BSc Information Systems and Computing.
