Society and Culture in the Roman Empire 1
This broad overview of the Roman Empire’s way of life begins with imperial expansion, its army, government, trade and common culture, then explores how far provinces resisted Roman rule and varied from a Roman socio-cultural ‘norm’, before surveying how gender, slavery, religion, ethnicity and wealth played a part in this. It will introduce you to some of the broad themes in the society and culture of the Roman Empire. Its focus is on the expansion of the Empire in the first century BC and its flourishing in the first two centuries AD, and primarily, though not exclusively, on the European and North African provinces, including Britain, for which it seeks to provide a context and comparisons.
