Subterranean London
This exciting module looks at the importance of the subterranean in debates about the city, technology and the imagination. We will examine representations of subterranean London from the Thames Tunnel in 1825, to the main drainage system in the 1850s, to the London Underground from the 1860s onwards. We will discuss the associations between the subterranean, hell and utopias in nineteenth-century novels and imagery, and look at the role played by the underground in film. The module includes two site visits.
