Colonialism, Independence and Imperialism in Latin America
In partnership with the Instituto Cervantes, this module provides an introduction to the European colonisation of Latin America from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, by analysing the main social, political, economic and demographic transformations. It also examines the struggles for independence and the formation of the new states, as well as the arrival of a new imperial power.
Students enrolled on this module will be eligible for a 10 per cent discount on the cost of Spanish language courses at the Instituto Cervantes, followed by a 15 per cent discount for subsequent Spanish language courses. Students completing the Birkbeck module will also be awarded a separate certificate from the Instituto Cervantes.
