Overview
- Interested in film, media, journalism, screenwriting and public relations, but can't decide which one to study? Well, this flexible, multidisciplinary course allows you to combine elements of all of these different areas of creative media practice. A key objective is to develop your understanding of media culture, so that you can put your own work, and the work of others, in its industrial, political and social context. The course offers a wide range of modules, taught by skilled and experienced practitioners.

Course structure and modules
To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete modules worth a total of 120 credit points.
There are no compulsory modules or pathways, as this programme is designed to allow you flexible learning across modes of media. Take modules worth a minimum of 90 credits at Level 4 and no more than 30 credits at Level 5. You may include up to 30 credits at Level 4 from the Certificate of Higher Education in Film and Media Studies towards this award.

Please note: certain introductory modules are designated as prerequisites for more advanced or specialised modules.

Successfully completing the Certificate of Higher Education can reduce your part-time BA degree study at Birkbeck by up to 1 year. Several modules form part of degree programmes at Birkbeck:
- BA Film and Media: Screenwriting; Introduction to Journalism; Media, Technology and Society; Web Design and Development: Effective Website Development.
- BA Journalism and Media: Introduction to Journalism; Writing for Magazines; Media, Technology and Society; Web Design and Development: Effective Website Development.
- Foundation Degree in Arts and Media Management: Screenwriting; Introduction to Journalism; Introduction to Public Relations and Marketing; Web Design and Development: Effective Website Development; Marketing and PR in the Creative Industries.
If you are offered a place on these degrees, you may apply for retrospective credit for these modules and may be offered retrospective credit for your other Level 4 and Level 5 option modules, at the discretion of the BA course director.
