Overview
- Approved by the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), this course gives you the opportunity to develop skills in print journalism, to understand the social and political context of your work, and to evaluate your performance. You'll be taught by practitioners with practical journalistic and teaching experience. Modules cover a range of topics, including: The Press in Britain; News on the Net; Travel Writing; Writing Reviews; Interview Skills and Feature Writing; and Writing for Magazines. Students are eligible to apply for NUJ student membership.

Course structure and modules
To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete modules worth a total of 120 credit points.
Take the compulsory modules Introduction to Journalism and The Press in Britain (worth 60 credits in total) and choose another 60 credits from the option modules, taking no more than 30 credits at Level 5.

Successfully completing the Certificate of Higher Education can reduce your part-time BA degree studies at Birkbeck by up to 1 year. Related degree programmes at Birkbeck include our BA Journalism and Media, BA Film and Media, BA Arts and Humanities and our Foundation Degree in Arts and Media Management.
If you are offered a place on these degrees, you may apply for retrospective credit for Press in Britain and Introduction to Journalism and may be offered retrospective credit for your other Level 4 and Level 5 option modules, at the discretion of the BA course director.
