Hidden Histories: Black British History and Memory in the Archives and Beyond
This innovative, source-led module explores the rich and diverse history and heritage of Black communities and individuals in Britain from the eighteenth century to the present. Working in conjunction with some of London’s leading archives and museums – including the National Maritime Museum, National Archives, Transport Museum, London Metropolitan Archives and Museum in Docklands – we explore issues of migration, settlement and diaspora; social, home and working lives; political identities and protest; Black arts and culture; and issues of gender and sexuality. This module provides an exciting opportunity to handle and interpret documents and artefacts, and so uncover Britain’s Black history first-hand. The module takes place over six Saturdays and is being developed in commemoration of the bicentennial of the parliamentary abolition of the slave trade.
