If your interest is confined to the field of mathematics and its applications, then mathematics and further mathematics is an ideal subject combination for you to enhance your skills before proceeding to undergraduate study in mathematics, or to higher degrees in areas such as financial economics, management, statistics and business forecasting.
This intensive programme will help you gain the knowledge and skills you need for degree study. It also includes modules to help develop your study and research skills and to assist with your personal development and planning of applications for further study.
What will I be studying?
To gain the Certificate of Higher Education, you must successfully complete the following eight modules, worth a total of 120 CATS points:
- Mathematics: Parts 1–3
- Further Mathematics: Parts 1–3
- Personal Progress and Development Planning
- Study and Research Skills for Physics and Mathematics.

What can I go on to do?
Students who are awarded the Certificate of Higher Education are guaranteed an interview for related part-time evening BSc degrees at Birkbeck. The programme is also recognised by other colleges of the University of London, as well as other higher education institutions offering full-time degrees.
On successful completion of the Certificate of Higher Education, you may progress to a variety of degrees, including mathematics and statistics, statistics and economics, statistics and management, accountancy, information systems and management.
We also offer guidance with your UCAS application, should you decide to continue your studies outside Birkbeck.
