Pioneer: Starting a Business

Pioneer is a dedicated online course for individuals who want to develop the knowledge and skills to excel as an entrepreneur. If you have a business idea, are in the early stages of starting up a venture or are keen to set something up in the near future, this is the course for you.

Consisting of seven intensive workshops and culminating in a Competition and Awards evening, our Pioneer course aims to launch you onto your start-up journey. The skills you learn will encourage you to develop an entrepreneurial mind-set that adds value to every stage of your career.

It's an exciting, motivating and invaluable series of monthly workshops filled with advice and tips from those who have already been there and done it. It will help give you the head start you need to make your business a success.

Our Pioneer course is designed to:

  • develop your understanding of what it means to be an entrepreneur
  • enhance key skills for you to succeed in starting a business
  • give you the opportunity to learn from and network with entrepreneurs and like-minded people to cultivate a strong network
  • provide you with the focus to put your ideas into practice: develop a plan, put a strategy in place, pitch your idea
  • give you the starting point and motivation to be a successful entrepreneur

Pioneer students will have the opportunity to enter the Pioneer Competition, which involves submitting a two-minute video pitch for their idea. Six finalists will be selected to pitch at the Awards evening in June.

There are two awards available: Best Business Idea and Best Business Pitch. Finalists compete for a valuable start-up support Prize Package.

Note: if you are already a Birkbeck student studying for an undergraduate or postgraduate course in 2020-21, you can apply for a complimentary place on Pioneer. Applications will be open at the end of August 2020 via a separate application form. For questions, please .
