Learn how to speak and understand Italian from beginner level and discover the diversity of cultures in the Italian-speaking world. You can take Italian 1 as a short course, or as part of a BA degree

We offer Italian language courses from beginner to advanced levels:

This 29-week interactive module, leading to *CEFR stage A2/GCSE, is for complete beginners. It will teach you how to speak and understand basic Italian. You will also learn to speak and write at a basic level about yourself and your family, your home, your hometown and everyday routines, your feelings, past events and future plans, the climate, people, clothes, culinary tastes, visits to shops, restaurants and cinemas. You will learn to give directions and tell the time in Italian.

You will also be introduced to a variety of Italian media - websites and newspapers - and learn to give opinions on books, films and contemporary events.

    Visa requirements

If you are not from the European Economic Area (EEA) and/or Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa.

The visa you apply for varies according to the length of your course:

    • Courses of more than six months' duration.

    • Pre-sessional English language courses.

International students who require a Tier 4 visa should apply for our full-time courses (with the exception of modular enrolment certificates of higher education and graduate certificates), as these qualify for Tier 4 sponsorship. If you are living in the UK on a Tier 4 visa, you will not be eligible to enrol as a student on Birkbeck's part-time courses (with the exception of some modules).
