Introduction to Psychodynamic Counselling

This exciting new course explores the nineteenth-century psychoanalytic roots of contemporary psychodynamic therapy. The course looks at the lives and contributions of the main thinkers, situating the theories within their historic frame of reference. By considering clinical case material you will be invited to compare the experience of Freud’s patients with the needs and expectations of twenty-first-century clients. This thought-provoking and intellectually stimulating course draws on art, literature, music and film as a means of situating psychoanalytic theory within its social and cultural context.

There are no formal entry requirements for this 30-hour non-assessed course. It can be taken alone or alongside any of the other short courses: Basic Psychodynamic Counselling Skills; Introduction to Counselling; Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychosocial Studies. The four courses can be taken in any order.

Introduction to Psychodynamic Counselling takes place at Birkbeck, University of London, on more than one occasion during the year. Please see below for details.
