The Versatile Journalist

A nose for a story and a flair for writing isn't enough to operate as a twenty-first-century journalist. Increasingly, we all need to think pictures, headlines, standfirsts, infographics and video as well as text; and know how these elements combine on the page to sell and retell the story across different media and through the day.

Meanwhile, in this fast and fragmenting world the opportunities (and money) are there for the journalist with the inside edge to feed a specific readership's special interest - be it sport or science, fashion or finance, music or motors.

The Versatile Journalist short course builds on Introduction to Journalism first by initiating you into the key production skills such as subediting and layout and design that will help you deliver a stronger and more attractive article 'package'. It will also encourage you to identify and help turn an interest or even unnoticed talent into what many, especially those armed with that visuals and production-oriented knowledge, find rewarding work as a specialist freelance or staff journalist. Or even entrepreneur.

This short course can be taken as a stand-alone course or it may be available as part of a Certificate of Higher Education.
