Classes

Overview

Our Applied Data Interpretation and Analysis fast-track short course, offered with both online and on-campus teaching, will help you to interpret and analyse economic data from sources such as the Financial Times and The Economist. You will learn to better understand the original sources of such data, as well as to critically interpret graphs and summary statistics. The course will also familiarise you with applying techniques of data analysis, including the use of statistics, to different empirical contexts such as regression output and coefficients.

The course starts with an overview of descriptive statistics, probability and distributions before we move on to estimation, inference and hypotheses testing within the context of a simple regression model. We provide you with relevant examples and problems using real data wherever possible.

Teaching is through a combination of lectures, seminars and class presentations, either individually or in groups, and topics include:

  • Descriptive statistics
  • Introduction to SPSS
  • Probability
  • Conditional probability
  • Probability distributions
  • Normal distribution
  • Confidence intervals - t-distribution
  • Hypothesis testing for the population mean
  • Chi-squared distribution
  • Two-sample tests
  • Hypothesis testing in SPSS
  • Simple regression and correlation

This innovative short course gives you the freedom and flexibility to decide how you wish to attend each class: either online or on campus. You simply register for this course and decide on each day of classes which you prefer, without needing to notify us beforehand. Our Saturday classes consist of both a practical session and a lecture.

The course is assessed by two 1500-word assignments (30% each) and an in-class assessment (40%).

This can be taken as a standalone short course or as a part of:
