Understanding Organisations

This course provides an introduction to organisations, their structure and culture, and the behaviour of individuals and groups within them. Topics covered include: the nature and types of organisation; individual differences; power; job design and teamwork; motivation; and communication.

This Short Course can be taken as a stand-alone course or it may be available as part of a Certificate of Higher Education.

Learning objectives

This course aims to enable you to understand the structure of organisations and how they influence not only the performance of the workforce but also the culture and resulting effectiveness and quality of output and effectiveness.

It will develop an awareness and understanding of:

  • The key features of effective organisations
  • The nature and purpose of organisations
  • The relationship between organisational structure, culture and performance
  • How to map an organisation's structure and culture
  • The role and importance of power, politics, conflict and influencing strategies within organisations.
